ClawMenu Is A Combined Mac Finder & Launchpad Alternative

Developers and designers often create variations of how or what the next version of iOS could/should look like, but you don’t see as many conceptualizations and renderings for OS X. ClawMenu is a Mac app that dares to re-imagine how Finder and Launchpad could work together, providing you with a single place to browse files in Finder and launch apps. It’s worth $7.99 in the Mac App Store and has a demo version that you can use for seven days, no strings attached. It allows you to add folder locations, preview and open files, launch apps, and add folder shortcuts. The app can be brought to front by moving your mouse cursor to a screen edge of your choice.
ClawMenu is both a file browser and an app launcher; the interface comprises two bars, one each at the top and bottom with a large center panel for viewing files, apps and folders. It adds an icon to both the Menu Bar and the Dock. Clicking either one will launch app. At the top and bottom, you can add folder locations or shortcuts. Click the plus sign on the top bar to add a folder to the top bar, and click anywhere on the bottom bar to add items to it. Your Mac HD, Applications and Home folders are added by default.
The Application folder is meant to be a Launchpad alternative, though it scrolls vertically and does not have a search feature.
ClawMenu
When browsing folders, hover your mouse over a file to preview and click to open. You will not be able to access the right-click context menu that you get when browsing files in Finder, which is another shortcoming of the app. You can, however, open the file in Finder. Clicking on an empty area will dismiss the app.
Interestingly, we actually found the app to be faster at opening and loading folder content compared to Finder.

ClawMenu view file
From ClawMenu’s preferences, you can set the app to launch at login, set an active screen border, or change the Menu Bar icon’s appearance.

We don’t normally review apps worth $7.99, but this one is quite unique, hence the exception. Still, I must say that the app, although promising, does seem slightly overpriced. It could use considerable improvement in some areas. A gesture and a keyboard shortcut to activate it would be a good addition, and we wouldn’t oppose a price drop either.
We recommend giving the demo version of the app a try before you decide to purchase the full variant.

Al Jazeera Brings Its Live Audio & Video News App To Windows Phone

News integrators like Flipboard are great if you are looking to stay in touch with latest happenings from around the world without having to spend a lot of time. However, these apps can not serve as true replacements for official clients of popular news agencies and TV channels. Dedicated apps offer access to exclusive content, news stories that are hot off the presses and other interesting material. So, it is certainly good to see official clients of famous news services coming to Windows Phone. The BBC andCNN apps have been around in the WP Store for quite a while now, but it has taken Al Jazeera more than two years to come to Windows Phone after Android. Better late than never, and the app turns out to be pretty decent as well, bringing live streaming, picture galleries and the ability to preload articles for offline viewing.
Al Jazeera WP Home Al Jazeera WP Frontpage Al Jazeera WP Story
The app isn’t as customizable as some of the other news clients available for Windows Phone, with the ‘Home’ screen showing a predefined grid of topics, but the search button can help you in finding any topic. Details regarding the latest news stories, articles, videos and photos are all accessible from this section of the app. The ‘frontpage’ area shows headlines, and can also alert you whenever a new episode of a popular show becomes available. When it comes to actual news stories, most of them are accompanied by videos or at least images, and can be shared over social media or via email.
The app’s search menu can keep your history saved, and you can also use it to view the articles that have been bookmarked in the past. It is also possible to use the ‘saved searches’ section as your personalized feeds area of Al Jazeera, if you save searches with the right kind of keywords.
Al Jazeera WP Regions Al Jazeera WP Live Al Jazeera WP Settings
By far, the best feature of Al Jazeera for WP is the app’s live streaming capability. All you need is a decent internet connection to watch the service’s English broadcast live on your phone. And in case your data connection isn’t fast enough for handling video, there is the option of streaming just the audio.
Al Jazeera can double as a passable weather app, showing forecasts and current conditions of your area. To configure this feature, head to the settings menu and select your city. From the same menu, it is possible to set the app to preload articles for offline reading.
Al Jazeera is a neat app, but it is far from perfect for now. Live tile support and notifications are sure to go a long way in making the app a favorite for a lot of users. Al Jazeera works with both WP7 and WP8, and you can grab it for free by heading to the following link.

Make iPhone Alarms Read Aloud Weather, Battery, Time & Other Info

When it comes to third-party alarm apps for smartphones, there are some that won’t let you snooze the alarm until you thoroughly shake your device, or perform some complex logical tasks, but you won’t find many ways of adding similar capabilities to the stock Clock app in iOS. Unless you have a jailbroken device, of course. Wake Info is a new Cydia tweak that takes a gentle, yet effective approach towards making sure you don’t keep snoozing your alarm, and start your day with the right kind of motivation. The tweak endows the stock alarm app with the ability to read aloud any information you want to hear in the morning. The information can be anything from the battery level of your phone to the unread email messages waiting in your inbox.
Wake Info Settings Wake Info Variables Wake Info iOS
Since Wake Info isn’t a standalone app and makes all the changes to the stock Clock app, all its configuration options are located inside Settings. Before anything else, you have to enable the tweak using the first toggle provided in its options list. If you don’t have a problem with icon badges, turn the ‘Show Active Alarms’ option on, and a badge showing the number of pending alarm gets added to the Clock app.
To configure the Wake Info speech routine, head to the two options listed under ‘Configure Messages’. It is possible to make the alarms say different things when you snooze or dismiss them. The developer has written detailed instructions in each menu but thankfully, things aren’t as difficult to set up as they might appear at first glance. Just write any text you want in the available lines, and embed the tweak’s supported variables wherever you want to insert some real-time information. Wake Info offers quite a few variables; you can insert time, date, temperature, battery percentage, calendar events for the day, number of missed calls and number of unread emails to the tweak’s dismiss and snooze routines.
Wake Info is so detailed that it even lets you select the alarm volume level and language separate from the rest of the OS. To make sure none of the information is missed, you can toggle on banners to go with the speech. These banners display everything the tweak speaks, but tapping them won’t take you to any app.
Quite amazingly, such a feature-rich tweak is available as a free download for all jailbroken devices running iOS 5 and iOS 6. The tweak can be installed from the BigBoss repo of the Cydia store.

Nokia Releases SophieLens, Glam Me Lenses & A Plea-For-Instagram App For Lumia

SophieLens WP View

Nokia-Lumia-SophieLens-Glam-Me-#2InstaWithLove

Camera quality has always been a major bragging right of the Nokia Lumia series. You can point out many shortcomings in the Windows Phone platform but when it comes to hardware, Windows Phone 8 devices can certainly hold their own against most competitors. Nokia realizes this advantage, and a lot of their apps focus on image editing and photography. Once it really catches on, the whole concept of ‘lenses’ is sure to make Lumia popular among photo-freaks even more. For now, Nokia is taking steps in the right direction, and has released three photo-related, apps exclusively for Lumia devices! Glam Me,SophieLens and #2InstaWithLove all let you make changes to your photos in one way or another, and that too without spending too much time.

Nokia Glam Me

Glam Me is designed to make your self-shots look perfect. The app combines image filters with face enhancement options. There is one obvious caveat – Glam Me works only if your device has a front-facing camera. When you snap a photo using the app, Glam Me is intelligent enough to change a few aspects of your face automatically. If you are not satisfied with the result though, simply tap the ‘Edit’ button from the bottom bar. Using simple sliders, users can soften skin color, change the face’s tone, whiten teeth and alter eye size. The ‘compare’ button gives you a movable slider that you can drag around to get a full view of the changes before you make things permanent.
Nokia Glam Me WP Edit Nokia Glam Me WP Effects Nokia Glam Me WP Sketch
In the ‘Special Effects’ part of Glam Me, there are some really good filters that you can apply to your photos with a single tap. There is no option for changing the intensity of an effect though, so you will have to be content with the default value.
Glam Me works with all Lumia devices that have a front-facing camera and are running Windows Phone 8.

SophieLens For Nokia

Apps like SophieLens can really show the world what lenses can really do. This lens comes with a boatload of image effects that can be applied to the stock camera’s viewfinder. The app has been around in the WP Store for a few months, but it has just been re-released by Nokia as a free download for Lumia owners.
SophieLens WP Packs SophieLens WP Filters
A lot of the filters are available for free, but other effect packs have to be unlocked by upgrading to the pro version for $1.29. So give SophieLens a shot, and it just might become your favorite photo editor in no time.

#2InstaWithLove

#2InstaWithLove WP #2InstaWithLove WP Stream #2InstaWithLove WP Photo
Microsoft has been trying desperately to bring as many popular apps to Windows Phone as possible but so far, Instagram has proved completely elusive for the Redmond guys. Since no amount of trying on Microsoft’s part seems to be doing much good in this regard, Nokia has jumped in, taking a rather novel approach towards the whole issue. Rather than making a fancy photo editor and claiming that it is better than Instagram, Nokia has come up with #2InstaWithLove.
This new app is a fun way to let Instagram know how much you want their app to arrive on your Windows Phone. #2InstaWithLove shows you a photo stream of all pictures shot using the app. Every photo has the hashtag #2InstaWithLove associated with it, and you can help Nokia’s cause by sharing it on Facebook, Twitter and other social networks to help urge Instagram to release an official app for the platform.
The app is free and compatible with all Lumia devices running Windows Phone Mango or above.

From user feedback, the tool works perfectly on 64-bit versions of both Linux and Windows, though there hasn’t been any confirmation from Mac users yet.

Access Windows 8 Start Screen, All Apps & Search Charms From Desktop

Even though, applications like Start8 and Pokki for Windows 8 successfully restore the Start Menu, if you want play around with Start Screen a little bit, then Start Charming just might be what you’re looking for. The application is yet another Start Screen modifier (like we haven’t seen plenty of them already) that lets you display Start Screen within desktop in a manner similar to Immersive Taille and the likes. The application is pretty handy if you want to spend most of your computer time within the Desktop mode and seldom find the need to jump back to the Metro interface. The application also lets you invoke the Charms Bar from a system tray button.
Using the app is fairy simple; you install it and it automatically places the Start button where it should, using which you can bring up the Apps menu. It also brings in Search Charms to the right. You might be wondering if all it does is merely bring up the Apps menu, then where’s the Start Screen?

The application employs the Start button to show the Apps menu, while you can still bring up the Start Screen the old fashioned way – either by hitting the Win key on your keyboard or by using the Start tile that appears at the bottom-left corner when you move the mouse curs0r there – it’s simple as that!

The application also makes it easy to bring up the Charms Bar without using Windows 8 hot corners (the upper and lower right corners of the screen, to be exact). All you have to do is click the minuscule ‘Show Charms Bar’ button in the system tray.

Start Charming creates a shortcuts folder on the desktop, and you can use the shortcuts inside it to easily start and stop Start Charming with a click. There are also Admin and Docs folder here, the latter of which offers some documentation about the app in case you feel lost anywhere.

The Admin folder, however, houses an interesting Position Tool that lets you manually specify the Start Screen’s position on your Desktop. You can use the position bars and set them according to your preferences. Need to revert back to the original settings? Just run ‘Restore Defaults’ and bingo!

While not the most feature-rich Start Screen modifier that I’ve come across, Start Charming is handy for those who want to display Start Screen the same way, but just want to do it within the Desktop mode, with a way to bring up the Start Menu as well. Additionally, its ability to search metro apps without entering the metro interface itself can be useful as well. Testing of the app was carried out on Windows 8 Pro, 64-bit.
